Letter from LMVNĐLDC to President Trump to Vietnam to attend the conference with Kim Jong Un on 27 & 28 Feb, 2019

February 20, 2019
President Donald Trump
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. President,

On the occasion of your coming to Hanoi to attend the US – North Korea Summit on February 27 and 28, 2019, we, the undersigned, representatives of the Alliance for an Independent and Democratic Vietnam, a coalition that brings together organizations, civil societies, and people from Vietnam and abroad with the purpose of fighting for freedom, democracy, independence and territorial integrity for Vietnam, highly appreciate your efforts for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the Asia Pacific region which includes Vietnam.
We wish you and your country a great success.

We would like to take this opportunity to write to you and your country to present the Vietnamese people’s thoughts as follows:

On Vietnam, since 1954 in the North and since 1975 for both North and South Vietnam, the Vietnamese Communist Party has imposed a totalitarian regime on our country, human rights have been violated, people’s basic freedoms are deprived. Since the United States normalized relations with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1995, although the Hanoi government has somewhat eased its reign on the economy, people are still not allowed to exercise basic freedoms and democracy, the country still has no future, many prisoners of conscience are still unjustly detained or placed under house arrest, independent religions are still suppressed and cruelly treated.

Externally, Beijing’s Communist authorities used force to occupy the South China Sea, including Vietnam’s Paracel and Spratly Islands, established military bases to control the Southeast Asian nations, implemented a policy of expansion and world domination, and endangered the security and interests of the United States and others around the globe.

Dear Mr. President,

We learned from your published defense strategy that the South China Sea is one of the places where US interests need to be protected. We believe that Vietnam, if it becomes a free and democratic country, will be a useful partner and a reliable ally which will help your government’s Indian-Pacific strategy achieve great success.

Therefore, we respectfully submit to you the following requests:

1- Supporting the Vietnamese people to have a government truly free and democratic, especially the freedom of religion and beliefs, so that people can live in freedom, peace and prosperity; contributing to the stability, peace and prosperity in the Asia Pacific region; and securing the interests of the United States of America.

2. Pressuring Hanoi authorities to immediately release all prisoners of conscience who are still in detention, including religious practitioners and believers, to return property confiscated back to religious organizations and people.

3. Forcing the Beijing Communist government to:

a. Respect international laws for the sea and sovereignty of nations.

b. Disband military bases which have been set up illegally in the South China Sea.

4. Help Vietnam bring the issue of South China Sea to the international Permanent Court of Arbitration to deal with parts of the sea and islands that China have previously forcibly taken from Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.

May the Almighty bless Mr. President and the American people.

Best regards,

Vietnam and Overseas, February 20, 2019
